Formula
Waist ≥102cm(M)/88cm(F) · TG ≥150 · HDL <40(M)/50(F) · BP ≥130/85 · Glucose ≥100. 3+ = metabolic syndrome.
How it is calculated
The five criteria are a large waist, high triglycerides, low HDL, elevated blood pressure and elevated fasting glucose. Three or more defines the syndrome.
They travel together because they share one root: chronic hyperinsulinemia. Metabolic syndrome is really a hormonal problem — and it is reversible.
Frequently asked questions
How many criteria mean metabolic syndrome?
Three or more of the five. Two is a subclinical warning worth acting on.
